Abstract. The article analyzes the main features of independent educational activity as the basis for professional improvement of cadets of the National Guard troops institutes. Particular attention is paid to updocting the experience of independent educational activity in the context of fundamental changes taking place in modern society. After analyzing the specialists views on the learners’ independent work organization, the author explains the role of the independent work as the most important component of the learning process in the increase of level of the future officers professional training, and also specifies the essence of the cadets’ independent work, its goals, didactic principles, types and forms of conduct.
